Rana Verona-Itas Trentino 0-3, the match report

Match Recap. Itas Trentino took the court in Verona with the same lineup used in the first two sets of their CEV Cup match on Thursday against Romanian side Brasov: Sbertoli as setter, Gabi Garcia as opposite, Michieletto and Lavia as outside hitters, Bartha and Flavio as middle blockers, and Laurenzano as libero. Rana Verona countered with Abaev as setter, Jensen as opposite, Keita and Mozic as outside hitters, Cortesia and Zingel as middle blockers, and D’Amico as libero.
The visitors started aggressively in break points (5-2), with Flavio standing out early, forcing Stoytchev to call a quick timeout. After the break, the Brazilian middle blocker continued to score, including from the service line, helping the visitors extend their lead to 8-3, and later 11-5. Two mistakes (a long reception by Lavia and a first-time error by Bartha) gave Verona some breathing room (11-8, timeout Soli), but Trentino responded with an attack from Michieletto and Flavio to extend the lead to 15-10. Alessandro then took over serving, scoring three consecutive aces and a long service rotation up to 21-10, allowing Trentino to close the first set 25-16 with a spike from Lavia.
In the second set, Verona changed their formation, inserting Sani as a pseudo-opposite, but Trentino’s serve continued to dictate the tempo: Michieletto (5-2) and Gabi Garcia (9-5), forcing Stoytchev to call another timeout. The Puerto Rican opposite continued to hit well from the service line, pushing the lead to 12-6. At their best, Itas Trentino slightly lowered their guard, allowing Verona to reduce the deficit to three (12-9). After a timeout from Soli, his team found momentum again (16-11) with contributions from Michieletto and Lavia (18-13). Verona, led by Mozic, tried to fight back (18-15), but the European Champions didn’t concede more points (22-19) and closed the set 25-19, benefiting from a block by Lavia on Zingel and a net error by Keita.
After the switch of sides, Rana Verona attempted to react through Keita and Mozic (4-6), but Trentino quickly equalized at 8-8 with Bartha’s attack. The teams then exchanged points for a long period (12-12, 17-17), with both sides trading the lead. In the final sprint, Mozic hit out (22-20), handing the visitors the break they needed to secure the win: Michieletto defended a crucial ball until the final point, closing the match 25-23.
