2025 CEV Cup, in the quarter-finals challenge with the french team of Chaumont Vb 52

The qualification for the quarter-finals of the 2025 CEV Cup, which took place this evening at the ilT quotidiano Arena, allowed Trentino Volley to enter the top eight teams in the competition. The next step to take in order to make another leap forward towards the final stage of the table will see a French team as an opponent. In the fifth double act of the competition (which, until the final, always and only offers round-robin matches) Trentino Itas will face Chaumont Vb 52, which on Wednesday night ended its third experience in the Champions League, placing third in Pool E of the group stage. The first leg will be played in France between the 11th and 13th February, the second leg back in Trento between the 25th and 27th of February 2025. The official date and time of the game will be determined by the individual clubs, in agreement with their respective national federations and the CEV.
Just like what happened in the previous rounds, the qualification will be obtained by the team which, in the span of the double confrontation, will obtain the most amount of points according to the leaderboards of the two games in which they are given - like the SuperLega championship - : 3 points for the 3-0 and 3-1 victory, 2 for the 3-2 victory and 1 for a 2-3 defeat. The golden set (play-off tiebreaker game to be played until the 15th at the end of the second round) will be played only if the points are even.

The identikit of Chaumont Vb 52 (France)
The Society representing north-eastern French city of 24.000 inhabitants, capital of the department of the Alta Marna, was founded in 1963, but it has actually risen to the national limelight only in the 2011/12 season, when winning the Play Off was promoted to the highest league in the Alps. It began participating in international competitions from the 2013/14 season, overall competing in three editions of Champions League (2018, 2019, and 2025, after just finishing in 3rd place in Pool E thanks to the victory by Jastrzebski), three Challenge Cups, and six CEV Cups, including the current one. For its achievements, there are a national title, won in 2017 thanks to 3-0 in the final match at Toulouse, two French SuperCups (2017 and 2021) and a French Cup (2022); still in 2017, it also barely touched victory in the European field, coming very close to it in the Challenge Cup, but losing in the final to Novy Urengoy. Last season, it stopped in the semi-finals of the Transalpine Championship Play-offs, where it currently occupies third place in the standings after seventeen days, with 36 points and twelve wins.
A great protagonist of the climb to the top of the red-black French volleyball club was Italian coach Silvano Prandi, already on Trento’s bench between 2003 and 2005 for 61 official matches, who has led the team since 2015. In the previous seasons, many have been the high-ranking players under his leadership of Chaumont: Boyer, Louati, Herrera Jaime, Averill and Lanza are the most notable. The current roster counts young, national, promising players like the spiker Henno (son of Hubert, ex libero of Rome, Cuneo and Macerata) and the opposite Toledo, but also on foreign players like the American Holdaway (middle-blocker), Pasteur (spiker), and Worsley (setter), the Finnish Sukihkonen, and the German Maase (former Friedrichshafen).
With Trentino Volley, the club has two previous official records, related to the 2017/18 season, when the two clubs met in the round of 16 of the 2018 Champions League: Trento passed the turn after losing the first leg in Reims at a tie-break on the 14th March 2018 and winning the home game 3-0 six days later.
Starting six: Worsley (setter), Toledo (opposite), Pasteur-Suihkonen (spiker), Holdaway-Maase (middle-blocker), Durand (libero).
